Sources: Colorado Rapids rejects offer for Cole Bassett, more clubs interested
Sources told MLSsoccer.com that the Rapids have rejected another transfer offer, this time from a Dutch club, while talks are still ongoing with a “better” Portuguese club.
Bassett, who turned 20 last week, has been a Colorado regular for the past three seasons. The midfielder has already made 55 regular season appearances (42 starts) during his young career, with an impressive 11 goals and eight assists in a box-to-box midfielder role. He’s appeared in all 15 Rapids games this season, including 13 starts.
MLSsoccer.com previously reported that Germany’s Freiburg team had rejected offers in the past, while clubs like Rapid Vienna (Austria) and Lausanne (Switzerland) were among those interested. Bassett has been in training with Premier League giants Arsenal, as well as Bundesliga teams Freiburg and Hoffenheim over the years.
Bassett is an energetic and action-packed midfielder. He is a product of the Colorado Youth Academy and signed his first professional contract in 2018 after quickly moving from their U-17 squad to the U-23 squad. Last year, he was voted No.7 on MLSsoccer.com’s Under-22 rankings, a list that included Brenden Aaronson (now Red Bull Salzburg), Mark McKenzie (now Genk) and Bryan Reynolds (now AS Roma).
Colorado are set to transfer home defender Sam Vines to Belgian club Royal Antwerp and are set to acquire Brazilian left-back Lucas Esteves on loan from Palmeiras ahead of Thursday’s secondary transfer window deadline. .
The Rapids also just acquired LAFC midfielder Mark-Anthony Kaye in a successful trade last week. Gold Cup star Kellyn Acosta returns to the squad after a month of absence. The pair will strengthen one of the strongest midfield groups in the league alongside Bassett and club captain Jack Price.
