Parenthood Podcast, Is It Normal? episode 7 is now live
This week on Is This Normal, hosts Sarah and Sheena are joined by Bernard McCloskey, Head of Education for NI Screen.
Bernard discusses the endless possibilities for young people in Northern Ireland who are passionate about games, coding, movies and technology and how screen time isn’t so bad and can be of real educational value for kids.
Discussing on the podcast his advice for parents on choosing the right movies and programs for kids, Bernard said, “My advice would be to sit and watch it with them and check it out as a parent and to see if it is suitable for their age and if they will understand what is going on.
“If there are things that worry you that you think no, then maybe they shouldn’t be looking at this until they are a little older.
“So check it first, if you can’t watch it, find out on the internet. There is always great information on the internet.”
On the opportunities that exist in Northern Ireland in the screen industry, Bernard said: “The opportunities are increasing rapidly, we have seen very rapid growth in areas like animation production here in Northern Ireland. and also game development.
“We created The Pixel Mill in Belfast as part of this gaming side initiative so that young start-ups can grow and work together and learn from each other throughout the process. Have good computer skills and good coding skills will also be important for this.
“If you can write code, you can design a website or a new technology that can be distributed very quickly over the Internet and marketable, which is also important.”
