No racial quotas in the recruitment of the MAF, according to the chief of the defense forces
KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): The Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) does not set any racial quotas for recruiting soldiers, said Defense Force Chief Gen. Tan Sri Affendi Buang (Photo).
He said the idea that only a particular breed was favored to join the MAF was a misconception, as staff recruitment was subject to applicants who met the stipulated conditions.
“MAF has never set quotas for any race when conducting its selection and recruiting process, so there should be no notion that MAF is only for a particular race.
“The selection is carried out in a fair and transparent manner without taking into account differences of race or religion,” he said in a special interview on the 88th MAF Day at the Wisma Perwira ATM here.
Affendi said an analysis of the military youth recruiting exercise between 2017 and 2020 showed that non-Malays made up 20 to 25 percent of recruitments each year.
“For young recruits in the Royal Malaysian Navy, recruitment (of non-Malaysians) has shown an increase of 18% between 2016 and 2020.
“For the Royal Malaysian Air Force, in 2019, applications (from non-Malaysians) represented 19.5% of the total applications and last year the figure was 24% of the total,” he added. .
Affendi said non-Malays currently make up 14.49% of MAF staff.
“Although the number of non-Malays in service may appear small, they play a very significant and laudable role in ensuring the peace, security and sovereignty of the country,” he said.
He said MAF is committed to continuing its efforts to attract young people of all races and religions to join it.
“This includes running online promotions and expanding ads on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter as well as on each department’s website.
“Apart from this, promotional activities will also be organized through exhibitions and career talks at national-type Chinese and Tamil schools, universities under the Ministry of Defense, public and private agencies,” added Affendi.
Brochures and leaflets will also be distributed to schools and other relevant organizations to enlighten people about career opportunities in the MAF.
MAF works closely with government agencies, elected officials and non-governmental organizations to publicize its recruitment exercises, he added. – Bernama
